Pretoria has successfully established itself as the cultural center of South Africa. It is one of the country's leading centers for academic pursuits. The University of Pretoria is South Africa's largest residential University. The city also houses the country's largest distance education university – the University of South Africa, or UNISA for short. The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is another premier institution in the city.
