Intro

Dakar, the capital city of Senegal is the westernmost African city. It is located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, on the country's Atlantic coast. Its position, on the western edge of Africa is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade. This advantage has been greatly responsible for its growth into a major regional port.

Dakar is a major administrative centre, home to the Senegal National Assembly and Senegal Presidential Palace.

The population of the metropolitan area as estimated in 2005 is at 2.4 million, of whom one million live in the city of Dakar proper.
